A Practical Guide by Dr Simona Ippoliti

Medical Statistics for Clinical Research

Finally understand the statistics behind every paper you read, every guideline you follow, and every study you want to run, even if you have always found statistics confusing.

A plain-English guide that skips the heavy maths and focuses on what actually matters at the bedside and in the literature. It takes you from "I switch off at the methods section" to reading, judging, and using statistics with quiet confidence.

A note from Dr Simona

After teaching medical statistics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy, for three years as a Visiting Professor, I decided to release everything I taught my students in one practical guide.

I watched bright, capable doctors freeze at the word "statistics", not because they could not do it, but because nobody had ever shown them the practical version. The one that matters in clinic, in journal club, and in the literature.

This book is that version. No heavy maths. No jargon for its own sake. Just what you actually need to read research, judge it properly, and start your own.

- Dr Simona Ippoliti

Is this you?

You are in the right place if…

Medical StudentYou want to stop cramming stats for the exam and actually understand it for good.
Junior DoctorYou want to read papers and join journal club with confidence, not quiet panic.
Aspiring ResearcherYou want to run your first study without the mistakes that get papers rejected.
Consultant / Healthcare ProfessionalYou want to judge the evidence behind your decisions, properly.
"I'm not a numbers person"Especially you. This book was written so you never have to be.

Statistics is the most misunderstood subject in medicine

If you have ever thought…

"I learned statistics for the exam, then forgot all of it."
"I skip the methods and results and just read the conclusion."
"I would love to do research, but the stats part terrifies me."
"I am not even sure I am reading this p-value correctly."

…you are not alone, and it is not your fault. Most of us were taught statistics as a maths subject to survive, not as a clinical tool to use. So we memorised formulas, passed the exam, and quietly hoped we would never need them again. Then the papers, the guidelines, the audits and the research projects arrived, and the numbers came back.

This book closes that gap. It explains what the numbers mean in practice, so you can read the literature, defend your decisions, and run your own work with confidence.

Everything inside the book

12 practical chapters, plus 2 included appendices. Each one focused on what actually matters.

Read mean, median, SD and IQR the way papers actually report them.

3

The Normal Distribution & Z-Scores

Understand the curve that sits underneath most clinical statistics.

4

From Sample to Population

See how a small study can speak about a whole population, and when it cannot.

5

Hypothesis Testing & P-Values

Finally interpret a p-value correctly, and stop over-trusting it.

6

Choosing the Right Statistical Test

The single decision that makes or breaks a study, made simple.

7

Correlation & Regression

Tell association from prediction, and spot when a line is being oversold.

8

Reading Risk & Epidemiology in Papers

Make sense of relative risk, odds ratios and confidence intervals at a glance.

9

Survival Analysis

Read Kaplan-Meier curves and hazard ratios with confidence.

10

Clinical Investigations & Screening

Understand sensitivity, specificity and predictive values for real decisions.

11

Study Design & Research Methodology

Match the right design to your question, from RCT to cross-sectional.

12

Planning & Doing Your Own Research

Go from a PICO question to a protocol, ethics, and a sensible sample size.

🎁

Appendix A: Tools for Doing Your Own Statistics

A practical tour of the software (free and paid: JASP, jamovi, Excel, SPSS, R) and the new AI assistants, with copy-and-paste prompts to choose a test, check assumptions and sense-check your numbers, plus how to protect patient data before anything touches a cloud tool.

🎁

Appendix B: Practice Question Bank

Exam-style multiple-choice questions drawn from the material Simona taught, with worked answers, so you can test yourself chapter by chapter.

Still thinking about it?

I have always been terrible at maths. Will I cope?

Yes. The book deliberately skips heavy calculation and focuses on understanding and interpretation. If you can read a clinical paper, you can follow this.

Is this enough to design a high-level study on my own?

This is a foundations book, built to get you started: reading papers confidently and planning a first, sound study. It will not turn you into a senior statistician, and it does not pretend to. For complex trials you will still want a statistician, and the book shows you how to work well with one.

I already passed my stats exam. Is there anything here for me?

Almost certainly. Most of us passed by memorising. This is the practical version you actually use at journal club, in audit, and in your own research.

What format is it, and how do I read it?

It is a downloadable guide you can read on your laptop, tablet or phone. Lifetime access, yours to keep.

Which software do I need to buy?

None to start. Appendix A covers excellent free tools and AI assistants, and exactly how to use them safely with patient data.
